The origins of Wakamiyaoji Gozen

Wakamiya-oji Street was built in 1182 by Yoritomo, modelled on Suzaku-oji Street in Kyoto (Heian-kyo), as the first step in the urban planning of Kamakura and as a prayer for the safe delivery of his wife, Hojo Masako.Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, which was originally located near Yuigahama Beach, was moved to its current location at the foot of Kitayama Mountain, and a straight road was constructed connecting Yuigahama Beach and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, which was named Wakamiya Oji. The construction of the city of Kamakura was based on this.

The meal was named after this historic road, Wakamiya Oji Gozen.

Wakamiya Oji Gozen is a meal inspired by kaiseki cuisine.

Kaiseki is a word that comes from Zen.It originates from the practice of Zen monks, who would hold heated stones close to their chests to stave off cold and hunger during their training. Therefore, "kaiseki cuisine" refers to a light meal to stave off hunger.

The "thick tea" served at tea ceremonies is very stimulating and puts a strain on the stomach if consumed on an empty stomach. Therefore, the food served at a tea ceremony is originally simple food designed to enjoy the tea.Our Aokai Gozen meal uses 20 different ingredients and is prepared with care to bring out the best flavors of the ingredients, giving our guests a sense of the season and allowing them to savor the best possible taste.
